Welcome back, Miley Cyrus!
It seems like it’s been forever since we’ve seen the starlet perform, but she hit the stage at last night’s Trevor Live! benefit to sing her hit ballad “The Climb.” She kept it simple and sweet, accompanied by a single guitar player before the packed house at the Hollywood Palladium.
Directed by Cyrus’ The Last Song producer, Adam Shankman, the evening raised funds for The Trevor Project, the national suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQ youth.
Lady Gaga received the Trevor Hero Award from the family of Jamey Rodemeyer, her 14-year-old fan who killed himself in September.
“This means more to me than any Grammy I could ever win,” Gaga said in her acceptance speech.
She praised the Rodemeyers’ for their work to end bullying. “I know they will continue to work in Jamey’s name … to end discrimination, to end fear,” Gaga said. “And to, as much as we can, come together, as it will take a village and an army, [some] countries and continents to make bullying a hate crime.”
The night had many highlights.
Darren Criss performed Tom Jones’ “It’s Not Unusual” after being introduced by Glee costars Jayma Mays and Dianna Agron. Amber Riley brought the house down with her cover of “All I Want for Christmas,” while former ‘N Syncer J.C. Chasez gave the crowd an amazing soulful rendition of “True Colors.”
Modern Family funnyman Jesse Tyler Ferguson sang “Somewhere That’s Green” from the musical Little Shop of Horrors. Neil Patrick Harris and his boyfriend, E! News’ new correspondent David Burtka, started off their duet of “You’re the Top” in a bed.
But it was former American Idol hopeful Stefano Langone who stole the show—and received a standing ovation—with a truly jaw-dropping performance of “O Holy Night.”
“It’s an amazing organization that is not only anti-bullying—which I think is really important—but I think really your youth should be the most fun time of your life and anyone who is inhibiting that should be stopped,” White Collar and Magic Mike star Matt Bomer told me on the red carpet. “It’s a great organization that is bridging that gap, supporting LGBTQ youth who are in need of help.”
Sponsored by the companies like Audi, ING, and E! Online’s parent company NBCUniversal as well as Fiji Water, Absolut Vodka and MillerCoors, among others, the gala also included a menu by celebrity caterer Along Came Mary.

Local Melbourne Florida organization To Write Love On Her Arms will be present at the first ever American Giving Awards (AGAs). Chase, dick clark productions and Intersport announced their joint effort to produce the first ever event. Hosted by Bob Costas, the AGAs will be broadcast on NBC Saturday, December 10 at 8PM EST, from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.
Thanks to the support of Sophia Bush, Miley Cyrus, Christina Perri, Amy Lee, Switchfoot, Anberlin, Brandi Cyrus, along with their many followers, TWLOHA is honored to have won the first round. The final round of voting for the American Giving Awards is open December 1 through December 8. During the voting period, participants can vote once daily for charities on Facebook. For more information on the program and how to vote, please visit here:
The organization with the most votes will receive a $1 million grant, the runner-up will be granted $500,000, a third organization will receive a $250,000 grant and two will be given $125,000 grants.
To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. Since its start in 2006, they have donated over $900,000 directly into treatment and recovery and have answered over 160,000 emails from over 100 countries.
At TWLOHA they often talk about being a bridge to help. Taking the first step to talk to a friend about something painful can be scary and so can packing a suitcase to go to a treatment center for the first or fifth time. The organization exists as a safe passage offering hope and encouragement along the way. Winning the American Giving Award will allow TWLOHA to strengthen that bridge, to take their message of hope and help on the road to more places and in more creative ways than they’ve ever been able to do before, such as:
- Investing in building an interactive platform that will allow people to contribute directly to treatment and recovery in their local community.
- Providing more widespread counseling scholarships for people with little or no insurance, alleviating the stress of a financial burden that often accompanies treatment and recovery options.
- Expanding the vision by taking HEAVY AND LIGHT – an evening of songs, conversation, and hope – on the road. There is a unique kind of community that happens when people gather in a room with songs and honest stories that resonate. Nights like this can change a perspective for people, and that shift could be the beginning of change or even a life saved. The next event is scheduled for Jan 7, 2012 at House of Blues Orlando.
- Strengthening the launch of the brand new high school campaign The Storytellers, a way for high school students to bring the story of TWLOHA and message of hope to their own campus through organizing and engineering community events.

ShockYa: What else is on tap for you? I know you have a film with Miley Cyrus (the Weinstein Company’s “So Undercover”), and I imagine that’s a little bit tonally different than this.
JP: You think? (laughs) I never, ever would have thought that I would be playing opposite Miley Cyrus in a movie, ever, but there we are, and we’re quite an unlikely team. And I think because of that we had such fun chemistry. I can’t even describe it, it was just weird — we made each other laugh and enjoyed each other’s presence. I’m also playing a character that I haven’t played before — a guy who’s a pretty straightlaced FBI guy, and giving her orders to go undercover. So that was a blast, and totally different than anything I’ve ever done. And I have another movie, “Angel’s Crest,” that Magnolia is releasing, [where] I play a district attorney who’s an alcoholic and has lost his family. And I’m reading stuff right now, looking at developing my own projects. I have a production company. But I’ve never really taken a break of more than a couple weeks [as an adult] and that might be a good idea for me. I come from an acting family, and I think it’s sacrilegious to turn down a great role. I’ve lived by that motto, and it can take a toll on you, because I don’t even think I know how to take a dive or phone a performance in. So when you really go and mean it (for that long), I think it might be good to take some time and regroup, to find a little balance.
